FDA Commissioner to Speak at AACC International Annual Meeting in Orlando

St. Paul, Minn. (September 6, 2005) – AACC International announces that Dr. Lester Crawford, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will be the keynote speaker at the association’s annual meeting.

“It is a great honor to have Dr. Crawford present at our annual meeting,” said AACC International President George Lookhart, professor at the Department of Grain Science and Industry, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. “His wealth of knowledge and experience will be a great benefit to all meeting attendees,” Lookhart said.

As commissioner of the FDA, Crawford ensures the safety and protection of the U.S. public's health. Prior to his appointment as commissioner, Crawford was chair of the Department of Physiology-Pharmacology at the University of Georgia, administrator of the Food and Safety and Inspection Service (USDA), and deputy commissioner of the FDA. From 1997-2002, he was Director of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Georgetown University and at Virginia Tech, where it moved in 2001. Crawford has played major roles in mandatory nutrition labeling, the formation of the World Trade Organization, and the control of chemical and microbiological contaminants for food. He has also been an advisor to the World Health Organization for much of his career.

“As our association continues to be proactive in staying on top of important nutritional topics, such as whole grains and carbohydrates, and other key grain-science research developments, it is vital that we provide our members with opportunities to hear from people like Dr. Crawford,” said Stuart Craig, incoming AACC International president and director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs for Danisco USA Inc, Ardsley, NY.

Crawford will speak at the Opening General Session on Monday, September 12 from 7:45 - 9:00 a.m. The AACC International Annual Meeting will be held September 11-14, 2005 at the Gaylord PalmsTM Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
