AACC Announces 2003 Award Winners
St. Paul, Minn. (September 9, 2003) — The American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2003 honorary awards. The awards will be given at AACC’s annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, September 28 – October 2, 2003. This year’s award recipients include:
Alain Buleon is the recipient of the 2003 Alsberg-French-Schoch Lectureship. The award is sponsored by the Corn Refiners Association and is given in recognition of superior contributions to fundamental starch science. Buleon has been a member of the French National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) since 1979, serving as director of the Department of Physicochemistry of the Macromolecules from 1992 to 2002.
Olin Anderson is the recipient of the 2003 Thomas Burr Osborne Medal. Established in 1962, the medal is given in recognition of distinguished contributions in the field of cereal chemistry. Recipients of the medal are accorded the status of AACC Fellow. Anderson is a Research Leader for the Genomics and Gene Discovery Research Unit for the ARS at the Western Regional Research Center, Albany, California.
Randy Wehling, assistant professor in food science at the University of Nebraska, is the recipient of the 2003 AACC Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is presented to an AACC member and current teacher who has made significant contributions through teaching in the broad field of cereal science and technology.
Robert Cracknell, Barry McCleary, and Mark M. Stearns have been named AACC Fellows, a distinction given in recognition of a member’s outstanding contribution to cereal science and technology. The award honors achievements in research, industry, leadership, education, administration, communication, or regulatory affairs. Cracknell, a member of AACC for more than 25 years, currently works at AWB Limited, where he has played a pivotal role in Australian wheat quality improvement. McCleary is co-founder of Megazyme International, which develops and supplies diagnostic test kits and reagents for the cereals, food, feed, and fermentation industries. Stearns, a 30-year member of AACC, is the Director of Regulatory and Research Services for Interstate Brands Corporation.
In addition to these awards, AACC will announce the winner of the William F. Geddes Memorial Award during the Award Ceremony at the AACC Annual Meeting on September 28, 2003.
The American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) is an international organization of 3,000 grain scientists and other professionals who study the chemistry of cereal grains and their products or work in related fields.
