AACC Announces 2004 Award Winners
St. Paul, Minn.
(September 9, 2004) — The American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC)
is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2004 honorary awards. The
awards will be given at AACC’s annual meeting, held jointly with the
Tortilla Industry Association (TIA) this year, in San Diego, California,
September 19-22, 2004. This year’s award recipients include:
Bruce Stone is the recipient of the 2004 Thomas Burr Osborne
Medal. Established in 1928, the medal is given in recognition of
distinguished contributions in the field of cereal chemistry. Recipients
of the medal are accorded the status of AACC Fellow. Stone is an
emeritus professor of biochemistry at La Trobe University, Victoria,
Australia and has been an AACC member since 1985.
Sergio O. Serna-Saldivar is the recipient of the 2004 AACC
Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is presented to an AACC member
and current teacher who has made significant contributions through
teaching in the broad field of cereal science and technology. Serna-Saldivar
is a professor and head of the Food Science and Technology Department at
the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico.
Charles Gaines and Ken Preston have been named AACC
Fellows, a distinction given in recognition of a member’s outstanding
contribution to cereal science and technology. The award honors
achievements in research, industry, leadership, education,
administration, communication, or regulatory affairs. Gaines is the
director and research leader of the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Agricultural Research Service, Soft Wheat Quality Laboratory, Wooster,
Ohio, where he has served since 1979. Preston is a research scientist at
the Grain Research Laboratory, Canadian Grain Commission, in Winnipeg,
Canada.
In addition to these awards, AACC will announce the winner of the
William F. Geddes Memorial Award during the Award Ceremony at the Joint
AACC/TIA Annual Meeting on September 19-22, 2004.
AACC is an international organization of 3,000 professionals who
contribute to the research, development, and processing of grains and
grain-based products.
