American Association of Cereal Chemists Honors Julie Jones with Geddes
Award
St. Paul, Minn. (October 7,
2004) — The American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) awarded Julie
Jones, professor of nutrition and food science at the College of St.
Catherine, with the William F. Geddes Memorial Award, one of the
association’s highest honors. The award was presented on Monday,
September 20, 2004 during AACC’s annual meeting awards ceremony in San
Diego, California.
The Geddes award is given in recognition of the leadership and
dedication of the late William F. Geddes who served AACC long and
unselfishly as president (1938-1939), vice-president (1937-1938), and
Cereal Chemistry editor-in-chief (1943-1961). His service also extended
beyond these roles and over the years Geddes influenced AACC in
significant and long-lasting ways. In 1961, the Geddes award was created
to honor the zeal and unselfish industry of an individual member and to
emphasize the importance of his or her contributions to the work of the
association.
“Julie has consistently provided exceptional service and leadership to
AACC over the past three decades,” said AACC Executive Director Steve
Nelson. “Julie’s unsurpassed level of commitment to AACC has made and
continues to make a significant impact within our association,” said
Nelson.
An AACC member since 1974, Jones has been extremely involved in AACC at
all levels. She served as AACC president-elect in 1998-1999, president
in 1999-2000, and chair of the AACC Board of Directors in 2000-2001.
Jones has participated on many committees including Headquarters
Operations Committee, Finance Committee, Executive Committee, Scientific
Advisory Panel, Professional Development Panel, Emerging Issues
Committee, Teaching Awards Committee, Scholarship and Fellowship
Committee, Book Committee, Cereal Foods World Advisory Committee, and
the ad-hoc Committee to Define Dietary Fiber. Jones is currently the
chair of the Whole Grain Task Force Committee and has chaired the Food
Focus – Hot Topics in Nutrition Committee, National Short Course
Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Geddes Memorial Award
Committee, and has participated in several AACC short courses and
conferences. Jones also served as chair, chair-elect, and treasurer of
AACC’s Northwest Section and was a member of the Northwest Section’s
Long Range Planning Committee.
AACC is an international organization of professionals who contribute to
the research, development, and processing of grains and grain-based
products.
