Raymond J. Tarleton Graduate Fellowship

Joseph WarthesenThe Cereals & Grains Association Raymond J. Tarleton Fund supports student and early career engagement opportunities in the association, permanently endowed since 2003.

In March of 1950, Raymond J. Tarleton, a graduate student in the Department of Agricultural Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota, was hired by AACCI as a part-time technical editor and business manager. Ray made many friends among the association’s members and quickly became integral to the association.

As Executive Vice president of AACCI for 41 years, Ray Tarleton helped AACCI become the premier organization it is today. Ray’s contributions to AACCI are numerous. Ray oversaw the growth of the association and the staff supporting it. Ray was key in bringing together AACCI with the American Phytopathological Society, a society with which AACCI shares resources. He had the foresight to place AACCI's new headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. Nestled in an area with some of the country’s largest milling operations and thriving agricultural research programs, AACCI’s headquarters has remained in St. Paul since 1971. He also proposed, to some debate, the concept of Cereal Science Today (now Cereal Foods World), a journal with emphasis on applied science and association news. He maintained close relationships with members of the society, allowing him to deliver what the members needed. Ray was honored with the William F. Geddes Memorial Award, recognizing his unselfish contributions to AACCI.

After Ray retired in 1991, he and his wife Andy wanted to give back to the profession that meant so much to the Tarleton family. They decided to include the AACCI Foundation in their estate plan, and, when Andy passed away in 2003, the Tarleton Graduate Fund was established to help outstanding students achieve an education in the grains field. Ray passed away on October 28, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona, where he retired after more than 40 years of service to AACCI. He left behind an ongoing culture of excellence and innovation that will endure for many years to come.
