Protein Division​

General Information:

This organization within Cereals & Grains Association was formed in 1994 for members who have an interest in cereal proteins.

Mission of the Protein Division

The Protein Division provides a forum for scientists, engineers and technologists interested in all phases of protein chemistry as it affects the understanding, development and utilization of cereal protein products. Areas of interest include cereal proteins, their chemistry, their nutritive and biological properties and their development for food and industrial uses. The aim of the Division will be implemented through organizing sessions at meetings, networking and encouragement of students by awards.

What does the Protein Division Do?

  • The division presents a symposium at the Cereals & Grains Association Annual Meeting where invited scientists speak on cereal protein composition, structure and function.
  • Various awards are sponsored to recognize scientists and students working in the area of cereal proteins

Who are the Members of the Protein Division?

Any dues-paying member of Cereals & Grains Association who is interested in the area of cereal proteins is eligible for membership in the Division. Cereals & Grains Association professional, student, and life members are all welcome as division members.

How Do I Become a Member?

Division membership is offered when you join Cereals & Grains Association or when you renew your membership. Protein Division dues is $20 per calendar year for professional members and FREE to student members. If you are not currently a member of the division and would like to join, contact us.


Awards

Walter Bushuk Graduate Research Award Fund

Income generated from this fund will provide money for the recently established Walter Bushuk Research in Cereal Protein Chemistry Award. Instituted by the friends of Walter Bushuk and administered by the Cereals & Grains Association Protein Division, the Walter Bushuk Research in Cereal Protein Chemistry Award is designed to recognize students for their excellence in protein research. The award will be given annually if the committee finds a deserving Cereals & Grains Association student member who is pursuing a Ph.D. in an area of research utilizing cereal proteins.

The Protein Division proudly sponsors two awards for students working in the area of protein chemistry, in order to recognize their accomplishments, subsidize their trip to the Cereals & Grains Association Annual Meeting and publicize the field of protein chemistry.


Walter Bushuk Graduate Research Award in Cereal Protein Chemistry

 Nomination forms are due February 18, in the year in which the award is sought.

The Cereals & Grains Association Walter Bushuk Graduate Research Award in Cereal Protein Chemistry for Ph.D. Students is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions in basic and/or applied research in cereal protein chemistry.

This award recognizes research relevant to the broad aims of Cereals & Grains Association The research can be either fundamental/basic (such as improved understanding of structure-function relationships) or applied (such as development of new products, processes, techniques).

The awardee will receive an honorarium of $1,000 and a plaque, and will be required to present a lecture at the Cereals & Grains Association annual meeting of the year in which the award is given. The award will be given only if the Walter Bushuk Graduate Research Award Committee determines that an award should be conferred for that particular year.

Best Student Paper and Best Student Poster Award

The Division selects the best protein chemistry papers presented by a student at the Cereals & Grains Association Annual Meeting each year. The Protein Division Best Student Paper (presentation) Awards consists of a certificate, an honorarium, and recognition at the annual meeting. The Best Student Poster Award consists of a certificate, an honorarium, and recognition at the annual mee​ting.
