Marta Izydorczyk

Marta S. Izydorczyk is currently a research scientist and program manager of Milling and Malting / Research on Barley and other Grains at the Grain Research Laboratory, Canadian Grain Commission, and an adjunct professor at the Department of Food Science, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. Izydorczyk holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Ryerson Polytechnical University in Toronto, a Masters’ degree in Food Science and a Ph.D. in Food and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Manitoba.

Her research focuses on the molecular structure and physicochemical properties of starch and non-starch polysaccharides, such as arabinoxylans and β-glucans. Her research program aims at understanding and gaining control over mechanisms responsible for technological performance and functionality of carbohydrate polymers from barley and other economically important Prairie grains in complex food systems.  She is also responsible for evaluating quality of malting barley and developing procedures to fractionate grains such as oats and barley to yield milled products with enhanced functionality. She is also responsible for wheat milling and evaluation of milling performance of durum and bread wheat.

In addition to research Izydorczyk offers her services to many professional organizations and committees: she is chairing the Barley Quality Evaluation Team for the Prairie Recommending Committee for Oat and Barley, treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre; member of the Canada Grain Regulation Committee, scientific advisor for the BMBRI Technical Committee.  She has been an active participant of the American Association of Cereal Chemists International (AACCI), serving as a member of the Publication Task Force, the Scientific Advisory Panel, and the Program Team of the 2006 World Grain Summit, and director on the BOD of AACCI. She is a senior editor of Cereal Chemistry. She is a chair of Scientific Program Committee of the 8th Canadian Barley Symposium and 22nd North American Barley Researchers Workshop to be held in June, 2017.

Izydorczyk co-organized the 2006 International Plant Polysaccharide Workshop, a satellite meeting to the International Carbohydrate Symposium, in Winnipeg, Canada, and co-organized a joint conference of the 5th Canadian Barley Symposium and the District of Western Canada Master Brewers Association of the Americas in 2007 in Winnipeg. Izydorczyk was honoured with an invitation to deliver the 2007 Belfort Carbohydrate Lecture at the Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research, Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA.
