Established in 2005, the AACC International Applied Research Award is presented for a significant body of distinguished contributions to the application of science in the cereals area.

The following criteria will be used: The development of novel machinery, processes, products, patents, tests, methodologies, procedures, etc. taking advantage of the wealth of accumulated knowledge from basic research as available in the literature together with basic/applied research performed by the applicant in developing the product/patent. The methodologies, applications, products and processes must have a clear and sustained record of adoption and/or commercialization and must have contributed positively to the development of science and knowledge of relevance to the cereal/food industry.

The award will consist of a $2000 honorarium and a plaque and will be given to an individual scientist or a team of scientists. Recipients of the Applied Research Award are also accorded the status of AACC International Fellow for their contributions leading to this award. Awardees will have the opportunity to present a lecture during an annual meeting of the Association.

William F. Geddes Memorial Award

The William F. Geddes Memorial Award was created in 1961 to honor the zeal and unselfish industry of the individual member and to emphasize the importance of his or her contributions to the work of the society. The individual after whom the award is named served the association long and unselfishly as president (1938-1939), vice-president (1937-1938), editor-in-chief (1943-1961), active member, and committee member. Over the long span of his own association with AACC International, Geddes influenced the organization in many ways, contributing to its work and progress, increasing its usefulness to its members, and boosting its reputation in the fields of fundamental and applied cereal science. The name of the recipient is kept secret until the moment of the presentation at the Annual Meeting.

The award, consisting of an engraved plaque, was given posthumously to Geddes in 1961, and subsequently to: Clinton L. Brooke, D. B. Pratt, Jr., Kenton L. Harris, James M. Doty, Frank R. Schwain, John A. Johnson, Paul E. Ramstad, Edith A. Christensen, Welker G. Bechtel, Daniel G. McPherson, Francis E. Horan, George W. Schiller, Ralph H. Durr, Byron S. Miller, Raymond J. Young Scientist Research Award

Established in 2006, the AACC International Young Scientist Research Award is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions in basic and applied research to cereal science with the expectation that contributions will continue.

This award recognizes research relevant to the broad aims and interests of AACC International. The research can be either basic (such as improved understanding of structure-function relationships) or applied (such as development of new products, processes, techniques, etc.) and nominees may be from government, academia or industry. Evidence of accomplishments can include awards, publications, invitations to lecture, patents and commercialized foods, processes and/or testing procedures. The research will be evaluated based on impact on advancing cereal science knowledge or improved production or utilization.

Nominees must be no older than 40 years by June 1 of the year the award is sought, but nominations of younger scientists are particularly encouraged. AACC International membership is required. Achievements will be considered in relation to the age and experience of the nominee. The recipient will receive a $1,000 honorarium and a plaque. They will be encouraged to present a lecture at the AACC International meeting of the year in which the award is given. In his or her career, a person can only receive either the Young Scientist Research Award or the Biotechnology Division Bruce Wasserman Young Investigator Award.

Nominations for the 2008 award are due January 1, 2008.
