Applied Research AwardEstablished in 2005, the AACC International Applied Research Award is presented for a significant body of distinguished contributions to the application of science in the cereals area. The following criteria will be used: The development of novel machinery, processes, products, patents, tests, methodologies, procedures, etc. taking advantage of the wealth of accumulated knowledge from basic research as available in the literature together with basic/applied research performed by the applicant in developing the product/patent. The methodologies, applications, products and processes must have a clear and sustained record of adoption and/or commercialization and must have contributed positively to the development of science and knowledge of relevance to the cereal/food industry. The award will consist of a $2000 honorarium and a plaque and will be given to an individual scientist or a team of scientists. Recipients of the Applied Research Award are also accorded the status of AACC International Fellow for their contributions leading to this award. Awardees will have the opportunity to present a lecture during an annual meeting of the Association. Nominations for the 2008 award are due January 1, 2008. Previous Award Winners:
Carl Wilhelm Brabender AwardThe Carl Wilhelm Brabender Award was established to honor the distinguished contributions to the application of rheology in milling and baking. Sponsored jointly by C.W. Brabender Instruments, Inc. (South Hackensack, NJ) and Brabender OHG (Duisberg, Germany), the award is presented every 3 years and is administered alternately by AACC International and the Arbeitsgemeinshaft Getreideforschung (Detmold, Germany). The award provides a plaque and a travel grant to enable the recipient to visit scientists and laboratories in other parts of the world to increase the awardee's knowledge and experience in the field. The only qualification is to be professionally active in rheology, specifically those engaged in the milling and baking industry. The Awardee shall present an award address at the AACC International Annual Meeting or at one of the three annual meetings of the AG at which the award is given. Nominations for the 2008 award are due January 1, 2008. Previous Award Winners:
Edith A. Christensen AwardIn recognition of the central role that analytical methodology and approved methods have played in the history of AACC International and their future importance, the Edith A. Christensen Award for outstanding contributions in analytical methodology was created to recognize scientific contributions in analytical methodology, and service to the society through approved methods leadership. Award recipients must demonstrate excellence in two areas:
Nomination must be made by letter of nomination detailing the nominee's accomplishments in analytical methodology and the approved methods process, and two additional letters of support for the nominee. The award consists of a suitably inscribed plaque and a $1,500 honorarium. Nominations for the 2008 award are due January 1, 2008. Previous Award Winners:
Excellence in Teaching AwardThe AACC International Excellence in Teaching Award is to be presented to an AACC International member and current teacher who has made significant contributions through teaching in the broad field of Cereal Science and Technology. The award consists of an honorarium of $1,500 and a suitably inscribed plaque. Nominations for the 2008 award are due January 1, 2008. Previous Award Winners:
FellowsThe AACC International Board of Directors established a Fellows program in 1985 to honor association members who have made distinguished contributions to the field of cereal science and technology in research, industrial achievement, leadership, education, administration, communication, or regulatory affairs. Any member who has been a member for 10 years and made such a contribution is eligible. Recipients of the Thomas Burr Osborne Medal and the Applied Research Award are also accorded AACC International Fellow status. Nominations for the 2008 awards are due January 1, 2008. Previous Award Winners:
Thomas Burr Osborne MedalThe prestigious Osborne Medal, established in 1926 to recognize distinguished contributions in the field of cereal chemistry, was named after the outstanding protein chemist Thomas Burr Osborne, who received the first award in 1928. Nominations for the 2009 award are due January 1, 2009. Previous Award Winners:
William F. Geddes Memorial AwardThe William F. Geddes Memorial Award was created in 1961 to honor the zeal and unselfish industry of the individual member and to emphasize the importance of his or her contributions to the work of the society. The individual after whom the award is named served the association long and unselfishly as president (1938-1939), vice-president (1937-1938), editor-in-chief (1943-1961), active member, and committee member. Over the long span of his own association with AACC International, Geddes influenced the organization in many ways, contributing to its work and progress, increasing its usefulness to its members, and boosting its reputation in the fields of fundamental and applied cereal science. The name of the recipient is kept secret until the moment of the presentation at the Annual Meeting. The award, consisting of an engraved plaque, was given posthumously to Geddes in 1961, and subsequently to: Clinton L. Brooke, D. B. Pratt, Jr., Kenton L. Harris, James M. Doty, Frank R. Schwain, John A. Johnson, Paul E. Ramstad, Edith A. Christensen, Welker G. Bechtel, Daniel G. McPherson, Francis E. Horan, George W. Schiller, Ralph H. Durr, Byron S. Miller, Raymond J. Contact the Geddes Memorial Award Committee with questions on nominating a person for this award.
Young Scientist Research AwardEstablished in 2006, the AACC International Young Scientist Research Award is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions in basic and applied research to cereal science with the expectation that contributions will continue. This award recognizes research relevant to the broad aims and interests of AACC International. The research can be either basic (such as improved understanding of structure-function relationships) or applied (such as development of new products, processes, techniques, etc.) and nominees may be from government, academia or industry. Evidence of accomplishments can include awards, publications, invitations to lecture, patents and commercialized foods, processes and/or testing procedures. The research will be evaluated based on impact on advancing cereal science knowledge or improved production or utilization. Nominees must be no older than 40 years by June 1 of the year the award is sought, but nominations of younger scientists are particularly encouraged. AACC International membership is required. Achievements will be considered in relation to the age and experience of the nominee. The recipient will receive a $1,000 honorarium and a plaque. They will be encouraged to present a lecture at the AACC International meeting of the year in which the award is given.
