Results of the Annual Bill Doty Memorial
Golf Tournament

Good Course, Nice Day!

Nearly 100 players participated in the 1999 Bill Doty Memorial Golf Tournament at the annual meeting. Golfers boarded waiting buses in the chill, dark morning for the trip to nearby Echo Falls Golf Club, but soon, the sun came out, and play got underway. Players seemed to be pleased with the course, and a good time was had by all.

Marketplace, Table-Top Exhibits
Draw Large Crowds

Once again, the AACC Marketplace, featuring membership and other services, books, and the Silent Auction, were located in the exhibit area with the Table-Top displays. AACC short courses gave attendees the opportunity to test out their fishing skills and win a discounted registration to a course. The Books area featured a "Catch of the Day" with special prices on select titles, and many other activities and giveaways added to the fun in the hall. Attendees received ‘passport’ stamps for a prize drawing at the conclusion of the Table-Top sessions, and there are plans to offer the ‘passports’ at the 2000 as well. Look for details in upcoming issues of Cereal Foods World, and in your meeting registration materials, available in May.

Silent Auction a Success!

The 1999 Silent Auction was a huge success! Due to the efforts of many people, we were able to raise $9000, of which 90% goes directly to fund AACC-sponsored undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.

We owe a great deal of thanks to those who contributed items for the auction. The generosity of both corporate and personal donations was amazing! Of course, we cannot forget those who purchased auction items. As a result of the generous donations, we were able to offer more than 150 auction lots. The list continued to grow as the meeting progressed, with people bringing new items each day. We received a tremendous variety of items including company logowear, handcrafted items, kitchen appliances and consulting time. We also had an trip-for-two to next year’s meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, which brought in the highest bid of all - $1500! As for Gene Wisakowsky’s framed newspaper, K-State would like to report that it is "resting in peace".

The final total of $9000 was slightly under our goal, but with a few minor improvements, next year’s auction will meet its mark. We have several goals for 2000 including keeping the auction open longer, at times more convenient for meeting attendees. We’re also planning some pre-meeting publicity, and an auction catalog, complete with detailed descriptions of the auction lots, especially the big-ticket items.

Ultimately, we would like to offer more consulting time, project work and the like. The auction provides immense potential for free advertising, particularly for a company that’s just starting out or offering new services. Not only is it for a most worthy cause, it’s tax-deductible too!

We truly appreciate your involvement and hope you were able to take home something nice as well. The support we received from AACC Headquarters was tremendous; the staff is second to none! We look forward to next year, and hope to see everyone in Kansas City.

Noteworthy Keynote!

Shortly after delivering the Keynote Address at the Opening Session and Breakfast, Roger Beachy, Ph.D., of the Danforth Plant Science Center, was named 1999 scientist of the year on cover of Research and Development magazine, published by Cahners. Congratulations Dr. Beachy!
