Joseph Warthesen Young Professional Symposia Endowment Fund
The Foundation is establishing the Joseph Warthesen Young Professional Symposia Endowment Fund. Joe was a long time AACC International member and past president. He was a tireless volunteer on many Association activities and wonderful friend to so many colleagues.
A recipient of many university teaching awards, Joe taught more than 2,500 students the principles of food chemistry, food analysis, and related topics. He was often called on for advice on such subjects as food processing, and his research covered topics ranging from innovative methods of food analysis to ways to prevent bitter taste in cheddar cheese.
Joe received his B.S. degree in food science and industries in 1970
and M.S. degree in food science in 1972 form the University of
Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. degree in food science in 1974 from
Oregon State University. Warthesen was a professor and department head
of the Food Science and Nutrition Department at the University of
Minnesota. He was also the director of the Minnesota-South Dakota Dairy
Food Research Center.
Warthesen was an active member of AACC International, serving as
president (1990-1991), Technical Program Chair for the AACC
International Annual Meeting in 1986, and as acting editor-in-chief of
Cereal Chemistry. He also chaired the Excellence in Teaching
Committee and the Eagan Press Board and served as a member of several
other committees. Joe was also a member of the AACC International
Carbohydrate Division and Northwest Section.
Joe taught the AACC International Introduction to Food Chemistry
Short Course jointly with Gary Reineccius and spent a sabbatical form
the university (1994-1995) at the AACC International Headquarters
working on book acquisitions, the Check Sample Service, and AACC
International Approved Methods. During his time at headquarters,
he implemented the Eagan press Handbook Series.
This endowment will fund an annual Joseph Warthesen Symposia designed by and for young professionals at the Annual Meetings. The funds will enable the young professional committee to organize and pay for speaker expenses associated with the event as well as other potential activities for young professionals.
