Pulses (e.g. peas, chickpeas, and lentils) have over a $300 million impact on the United States economy. In addition, 80% of the pea, lentil, and chickpea production is in North Dakota and Montana. Thus, a pulse quality position has been created to capitalize on the importance of pulse crops to the regional economy. The NDSU School of Food Systems (www.ndsu.edu/foodsystems) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the pulse quality program by establishing a pulse quality laboratory and developing a research program focused on pulse quality and utilization. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively with members of the School of Food Systems, the NDSU pulse breeder, pulse grower associations, and the Northern Crops Institute to develop a high-impact, world-renown pulse quality and utilization program.
This position will have research and management of the pulse quality program as the primary responsibilities. However, this position will help with efforts to develop and expand the academic programs offered through the School of Food Systems. The School of Food Systems includes interdisciplinary programs that involve faculty from several NDSU colleges as well as domestic and international inter-institutional collaborations. The faculty member will have a minimal teaching requirement for the School of Food Systems that will be assigned according to School need and candidate experience. This faculty member will have an important and exciting role in shaping the future of the School of Food Systems and the pulse quality program.
Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate should have:
- Holds a Ph.D. or will complete a Ph.D. degree prior to the start of employment at NDSU (approximately June 1, 2010), in Food Science or a Food Systems related field;
- Research and/or teaching experience in food processing, food chemistry, sensory science or related field;
- Evidence of effective oral and written communications skills; and
- Evidence of being able to plan, organize, and conduct scientific research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Post-doctoral research experience;
- Experience in pulse related research;
- Evidence of effective supervision and training of subordinates;
- Experience working in or with the food industry;
- Experience with supervising or teaching diverse student populations, including underrepresented student populations and international students; or
- Experience in managing and/or conducting a pulse or other commodity survey.
Screen Date: Screening will start on March 15, 2010. The position will remain open until a suitable applicant pool is established. The anticipated starting date is June 1, 2010.

- One-page essay describing your research philosophy, including a vision for developing a pulse quality laboratory and any approaches for incorporating diversity initiatives.
- A half-page essay regarding your commitment to service the pulse industry (i.e. growers associations, food industry, university, etc.).
- A half-page essay describing your teaching philosophy, including any approaches for online delivery and/or diversity initiatives, and a description of the types of food science courses that you would like to teach.
