A Message from the Student Division Chair
I consider it to be a great privilege to be this year’s AACC International Student Division
chair. I am really excited and sincerely look forward to building a great team. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at Rutgers State University in
the Food Science Department, working on studying molecular mobility in amorphous solids. My involvement with
Student Division started with participating in
product development competition and then serving as the vice-chair for the division. AACC
International membership has helped me grow professionally
and has offered great networking opportunities both in the industry and academic.
The mentoring program has provided me with valuable career guidance and the
annual meetings have exposed me to high quality
and cutting-edge research. Today's food industry professionals are not just expected to focus on a niche market of consumers but also focus on global development of products, and as such, they need to build up a strong, up-to-date knowledge in science and technology,
and at the same time build a network on a global level.
AACC
International is definitely a place that offers both.
Rashmi Tiwari

New Fellowship from Kellogg Co.
AACC International Foundation recently received a $42,000 donation from the Kellogg Company to establish the Kellogg Co. R&D Fellowship.
This generous donation from Kellogg will fund a permanently endowed graduate fellowship that will be awarded annually to an eligible graduate student who is pursuing a degree in grain science.
“This fellowship is a small thank-you from the Kellogg Company to students around the world who continue to drive science and technology forward and, in turn, make the entire food industry stronger,” said Margaret Bath, vice president, corporate research, quality, and technology at Kellogg Company.
“The Kellogg Company has a rich history of corporate social responsibility. Our founder, W.K. Kellogg, sought to ‘invest my money in people.’ That legacy continues to guide Kellogg’s today,” Bath said.
The first Kellogg Co. R&D Fellowship will be awarded in September 2008.

Silent Auction Raises $3,500 for Foundation
More than $3,500 was raised during the 16th Annual Silent Auction, held during the AACC International Annual Meeting. The
silent auction is organized by the Student Division with the money raised going
to the AACC International Foundation; directly benefiting students with
scholarships and fellowships. Ten percent of the proceeds go to support the Student Division’s activities.
The silent auction has become a tradition during the annual meeting, and this year drew more than 100 donations from 32 companies. Student member Govindarajan Suresh Babu, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, chaired this event. In 16 years, the silent auction has raised more the $75,000 for the Foundation.
Plans are being put in place for next year's silent auction and your help is needed! Volunteers are needed during the meeting itself to set up display and help bidders;
watch for call for volunteers in Summer 2008. Students are also invited to donate items - university apparel is always popular.

What Grain Science Professionals Are Reading
Two new books were best-sellers at AACC International meeting.
Dietary fibre components and functions covers the most up-to-date research available on dietary fibre. This book is based on selected papers presented at the
Dietary Fibre 2006 – Multifunctional Complex of Components conference. The book covers the whole journey of dietary fibre from its synthesis in the plan, through food processing and digestive processes to its role in human health. It represents a broad range of disciplines including plant science, chemistry, microbiology, food technology, nutritional sciences, and medicine.

Carbohydrate Chemistry for Food Scientists, 2nd Edition is a complete update of the critically acclaimed first edition of Whistler and BeMiller’s authoritative carbohydrate reference for food scientists. This new edition is a concise, user-friendly, applied reference book for students who need to understand this specialized area. It provides practical information on the specific uses of carbohydrates, the functionalities delivered by specific carbohydrates, and the process for choosing carbohydrate ingredients for specific product applications. Readers learn basic and specific applications of food carbohydrate organic and physical chemistry through clearly explained presentations of mono-, oligo-, and polysaccharides and their chemistry. This updated resource serves as an essential tool for advanced undergraduate and graduate students on the chemistry of food carbohydrates.
