AACC International developed a
definition for dietary fiber in 2000.
This definition is:
"Dietary fiber is the edible parts of plants or analogous
carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion and absorption in
the human small intestine with complete or partial fermentation
in the large intestine. Dietary fiber includes polysaccharides,
oligosaccharides, lignin, and associated plants substances.
Dietary fibers promote beneficial physiological effects
including laxation, and/or blood cholesterol attenuation, and/or
blood glucose attenuation."
A request was issued for comments on a revised FAO/WHO
definition of dietary fiber, with a deadline of March 31, 2007.
The Scientific Advisory Panel recommended that a small task
force be created for this specific purpose. The Dietary Fiber
Task Force was formed with the following members:
Barry McCleary, Megazyme International Ireland Ltd,
chair
Per Aman, Swedish Agricultural
Univ.
Stephen Brooks, Health Canada
Stuart Craig, Danisco USA Inc.
Jon DeVries, General Mills Inc.
Dennis Gordon
Julie Jones, College of St.
Catherine
David Lineback
The Dietary Fiber Task Force drafted a
letter and it was approved by the Board.
